Coaching Experience:
Coach Jess enters her 3rd year at RISE Volleyball Club and 6th year coaching overall.
The first team Coach Jess ever coached was a 12u team her senior year of high school! She went on to coach at youth camps and clinics while playing in college. After graduating college, she was the 1st assistant coach for SOU under Josh Rohlfing, they won the CCC Championship, placed 1st in the conference, and made it to nationals for the first time. Murrey coached the 2010 CCC Player of the Year, 3 All-Conference selections, and 1 All-Conference honorable mention.
Playing Experience:
Coach Jess started playing club VB in 5th grade, playing on an 8th-grade team. She started as a freshman at North Medford High School. Then finished the last two years of high school at Ashland High School, where she and her bff Lindsey Stone (Gatorade player of the year) co-captained the team that beat Central Catholic and won a 4A state championship in 2005, making history as the first volleyball team south of Salem to win the championship. Coach Jess was recruited to play D1 at UNLV as a setter/hitter, but played outside hitter from 2006-2009. In 2007, she helped her team win the Mountain West Conference (BYU, Colorado State, Utah…) and make it to the NCAA tournament.
Coach Jess’s mom was a D1 Volleyball player out of Oregon State. After Jess interrupted her junior year, her mom (Merri) moved back home to play and coach at SOU. Merri coached summer camps with the famous John Dunning and adopted his techniques. She went on to be one of the greatest coaches in the Rogue Valley. She was also a single mom, which meant Jess went to all the practices and was raised on the court with a volleyball in her hands.
Collegiate Accolades:
In 2008, she was honored as UNLV’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete, recognizing both her athletic contribution and her academic performance. She was a four-time MWC Scholar-Athlete. In 2008, she was named to four all-tournament teams: at the ASU Sheraton Classic, the UNLV Invitational, the Oregon Classic, and the Denver Invitational. At the 2008 UNLV Scholar-Athlete Luncheon, she won the Top Sports Award— given to the student-athlete in her sport with the highest GPA. She was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 First Team in 2007 & 2008.
High School Accolades:
Named to the all-conference team all four years; earned first team all-conference in her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. All-state honors: first team in 2005, second team in 2004, third team in 2003. Led Ashland High to the Oregon 4A State Championship in her senior season (team went 34–1, 14–0 in conference). She’s married to her favorite person on the planet, Jerryck, who is also a former D1 athlete turned entrepreneur. They have two amazing kiddos, Lincoln and Landon. Linc is the reason Jess dusted off her coaching skills.
This bio makes her sound really intense, but she swears she’s super chill. For fun, you’ll find her nose buried in a novel —fantasy, sci-fi, or thrillers (nothing that would help her personal growth in any way). She also loves hiking and playing sand volleyball when she has time. Just don’t ask her to be on your city league team; she’s retired from indoor. No, she doesn’t do it all. Her house is always a hot mess, her husband cooks, her daughter decorates, her mom and grandma help with the kids—teamwork makes the dream work:)
